I really want to create a sort of shade grove on the south side of our backyard. We planted a variegated Silver Maple late last summer, and it even came back this spring! The next one I want is a Autumn Purple Ash tree…in the fall, the leaves almost look like watercolors, with yellow, purple and red on the same leaf. About $65 for a #7 tree at Caras.
Update 6-11-08: We bought our ash tree this past weekend! I have literally wanted this tree for 4 years. It looks great.
The other tree that I have been admiring is the hawthorn. I think I pass one every day on the way to daycare. The branches are very horizontal and they were covered with red berries all winter. I like the Paul’s Scarlet or Crimson Cloud. They were both about $65 at Caras for a #10 I think. I’m thinking of putting this in our back yard near the kid’s play area, because it won’t get too tall to block out the mountain view, but will give us a little privacy when houses start going in back there.
